Vanuatu
Consistently Voted one of the World’s Happiest Countries
Over 80 individual islands (65 inhabited) make up the nation of Vanuatu (officially the Republic of Vanuatu), which extends some 650-kms north-south in the South Pacific. This irregular Y-shaped tropical archipelago of unspoilt natural beauty officially lies in Oceania - northeast of New Caledonia, and west of Fiji - 1,770-kms east of Australia. The main islands are Efate, Espirito Santo (commonly referred to simply as 'Santo'), and Tanna. Other islands of particular interest include Pentecost, Ambrym and Malekula. Vanuatu population is approximately 336,500, concentrated in just two larger urban areas - Port Vila on Efate Island, and Luganville on Santo Island.
Vanuatu is the smallest of the five independent countries that make up Melanesia (a region of Oceania) - Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and East Timor - parts of Indonesia (West Papua) and French New Caledonia also belong to Melanesia.
Much of the archipelago is rocky and steep, covered in dense rainforest - including areas of sandalwood and other valuable tropical tree species. There's little permanent water on the islands, and only about 10% of the land can be used for agriculture. Active volcanoes are found on several islands, and frequent earthquakes indicate geological instability. Mount Yasur on Tanna Island is one of the most active of the volcanoes.
