On today’s Cruise & Travel Show, Greg and Gary whisked up off to the beautiful city of Montevideo, the Capital City of Uruguay and home to nearly half of the nations population. Montevideo has been captivating the hearts of many a visitor for years with its Old and New World fusion. Cobblestone streets, historic and colonial buildings surroundings atmospheric plaza’s make Montevideo a very attractive destination for anyone looking for an alternative (or additional) stay to Buenos Aires, which is located just across the Rio Plata.
Over the last 25 years, Montevideo has become a popular cruise port also. The size of the city means most attractions can easily be covered in a day, making it ideal on cruises in South America. Today’s Cruise Deal of the Day gives you that opportunity…
Flying to Buenos Aires on the 8th December, you’ll have ample time to explore the Avenida Florida, Casa Rosada and la Boca as you begin your South America holiday with a night in a beautiful downtown hotel (breakfast included). This sophisticated Argentine jewel is the most European of South American capitals. Boulevards here are broader even than those in Paris. Nightlife beats to the pulse of the tango and bossa nova. Glamorous boutiques invite those looking for that special gift (leather is especially good value), while restaurants sizzle to the sound of succulent steaks.
The following day you embark the 5* Celebrity Eclipse of Celebrity Cruises. Since Celebrity Eclipse joined the fleet in 2010, she has dazzled and amazed even the most well-travelled cruisers. Celebrity Eclipse hosts Qsine, a dining venue with a unique and playful approach to familiar dishes from around the world, and Celebrity iLounge, a hip, modern Internet café offering guests what they have asked for – easy access to the Internet, inspiring classes and latest tech gadgets. Add the fresh green grass on the top deck’s Lawn Club and the incredibly pampering services in Canyon Ranch SpaClub, and you may never want to set foot on land again! Celebrity Eclipse will stay in Buenos Aires for another evening, giving you even more time to Tango your way through the many highlights of the city.
After sailing from Buenos Aires, your first port of call is in Uruguay, but we’ll leave Montevideo for later on as you arrive in the city of Punta del Este – Uruguay’s second largest city. Leisurely browse through the chic shops and galleries of Calle Gorlero, or spend a relaxing afternoon people watching from a beachside café while the assorted sun lovers and jet setters around you enjoy one of the continent’s most storied playgrounds.
Sailing south, your next port of call is the Patagonian port of Puerto Madryn. This remarkable port nestled in the Golfo Nuevo is a wonderland of wildlife. See colonies of penguin, herds of sea lions and magnificent elephant seals. Look for Orcas in the nearby waters. Shop, visit the seaside villages or head inland to the vast plains of Patagonia. The port was originally founded in 1865 by Welsh immigrants, and the Welsh culture continues as you enjoy music and tea at the nearby town of Trelew.
There are many bucket list destination that you simply have to visit by Cruise Ship, and the next one is near the top of that list – Cape Horn. Tierra del Fuego, (Land of Fire), is the most isolated place in the Americas, and Cape Horn is its southernmost point. Named after the Dutch town of Hoorn in 1616, its craggy cliffs and windswept shores are stark, with a rugged beauty that creates a dramatic setting for the collision between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Next port is the famous town of Ushuaia in Argentina. Known as the world’s southernmost city and once home to a penal colony, Ushuaia is also our gateway to the magnificent Tierra del Fuego National Park. Named after the Yahgan Indians who lit fires in the region, this unspoilt wilderness of forests, lakes, rivers and glaciers is bristling with wildlife.
After spending a day sailing through the spectacular Straits of Magellan, you will arrive into Chile and the city of Punta Arenas. This city is an administrative commune and the capital city of Chile’s southernmost region, Magallanes and Antartica Chilena. Around Punta Arenas you’ll find soaring mountains, beautiful national parks, vast ice fields and towering glaciers. The city itself has been a hub of commerce and trade for generations, thanks to its access to both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Trek through Magallanes National Reserve or visit the penguin colony at Seno Otway.
A few days at sea allows you to enjoy the wide array of facilities on board Celebrity Eclipse before you arrive into today’s feature port – Montevideo. The full day in Montevideo will give you the chance to stroll along the Rambla, the waterfront drive that stretches for 12 miles. Discover sun-kissed beaches and sculpture-filled parks, and let yourself be tempted by several casinos, or stylish boutiques where suedes and amethysts are hard to resist.
Finally you arrive back into Buenos Aires and fly back home to Australia. Alternatively you could stay a bit longer, fly up to the magnificent Iguazu Falls or Rio de Janeiro, or even a second cruise around the Galapagos Islands – the choices are endless. What an adventure!
