All Things MALLORCA – 29th July

This weeks Cruise Deal is a cracker.  2 cruises, back to back on 2 different cruise ships and 15 different ports to explore, including today’s theme destination – Mallorca, Spain

Beautiful Venice, Italy

The package beings with a flight to Venice on the 31st May 2018.  On arrival you are transferred to your Venice Mestre hotel for the night.  The following day you are transferred to the pier to embark the stunning MSC Poesia for a 7 night Mediterranean voyage.  You will sail from Venice southbound, firstly calling in to the Italian port of Bari and its Basilica of San Nicola (Saint Nicholas), the Cathedral of San Sabino and the Castello Svevo of Frederick II to explore.  On to Katakolon in Greece, previously known as Olympia where the Olympic Games began in 776 B.C and where you can admire the old temples, altars and sanctuaries where ancient athletes once competed.  The pretty Greek Island of Mykonos invites you to wander through the narrow, winding streets of this delightful seaside village with its whitewashed houses, flowers and brightly painted shutters and doors.  Don’t forget to stand beneath the Windmills of Kato Mili on the hill overlooking the town.  MSC Poesia then calls into the port town of Pireaus, the entrance to the ancient city of Athens.  With is famous sites such as the Parthenon sitting on top of the Athens Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus and the narrow streets and cafes in the labyrinthine streets of The Plaka, Athens has so much to see.   A rare opportunity to visit Albania is next as you call into Sarande, which will surprise you with its laid back lifestyle, panoramic views and beachlife.  The historic Croatian walled city of Dubrovnik will invite you to explore its limestone streets and baroque buildings dating back to the 16th Century.  You then return to Venice to disembark the MSC Poesia, but your cruise adventure does not finish there.

The Charming Island of Mykonos

You will enjoy a coach transfer through the northern Italian countryside from Venice to Genoa, where your second cruise awaits.  The MSC Divina was featured earlier this week on the programme Mighty Cruise Ships, and for a very good reason – at almost 140,000 tonnes she is one of the biggest ships in the Mediterranean.  So off you go on another 7 day cruise in the Mediterranean…..

The Eternal City of Rome

From the coastal town of Civitavecchia you will visit the Eternal City – Rome.  With its Colosseum, St Peter’s Basilica, the Pantheon and many other historic sights, Rome is one of the highlights of any Mediterranean cruise, and you’ll have the full day to see as much as possible.  With its imposing Norman Cathedral and the majestic 9th Century Arab palace, Palermo on the Italian island of Sicily is a fascinating blend of culture and history., but make sure you allow time to visit the opera house.  From one Italian island to another, your next stop is Sardinia, and the port of Calgiari.  Calgiari offers the perfect mix of recreation and exploration options. The five-mile-long Poetto Beach is among the best city beaches on the Mediterranean, and together with the adjacent Marina Piccola, satisfies all manner of sun and sea pursuits.  Next up is our ‘destination of the week’ – Palma de Mallorca on the Spanish island of Mallorca.  A melting pot of Spanish, Roman, Moors and Tatayotic cultures and themes are seen throughout the town, and you’ll have the afternoon and the evening to enjoy the atmosphere of this lively town.  Valencia is Spain’s third largest city, and is home to the famous Paella!  The contrasting styles of traditional, contemporary and futuristic architecture will amaze you as you explore the city.  Your last port of call is the French Riviera city of Marseilles.  The largest port in the Mediterranean and the second largest city in France, Marseilles serves as your gateway to the lush fertile region of Provence and all its cultural contributions to gastronomic excellence, Impressionistic art, and ancient architecture.  Finally you return to Genoa for your flight back to Australia.

Stunning Palma de Mallorca, Spain

That is one ‘packed’ itinerary – you’ll need another cruise to get over it!!  You can fly out to Venice earlier if you want to (my advice – if you do extend, swap your hotel from Venice Mestre to one on Venice Island), and you can extend your stay in Genoa longer (more advice – Genoa is not far from Milan!).
