Rachell, Senior Travel Adviser based at Travel Masters, has recently returned from a truly inspiring trip to Africa, where she got to follow her passion for animal conservation! Rachell and her husband spent most of their time volunteering at Imire Rhino Sanctuary, about an hour outside of Harare in Zimbabwe. Here, they helped with the feeding of the animals, built enclosures, cleaned pens, aided in the removal of snare traps, tracked wild Rhinos and overall aided in the conservation of these beautiful animals.
It wasn’t all hard work though! They then flew onward to one of the most iconic bucket-list destinations on the globe – Victoria Falls. Here, they indulged in a stay at the famous Victoria Falls hotel! (You might recognise this property from our very own Travel Masters & The Travel Studio escorted tour).
Harare to Victoria Falls
My favourite, and definitely most rewarding, experience was volunteering in Zimbabwe at the Rhino Sanctuary. To be able to contribute to the future of the animals and the Zimbabwe small communities is such a rewarding and enriching experience. You certainly realise just how lucky we are here in Australia.
Victoria Falls is one of those natural phenomena so iconic that it features on nearly everybody’s wander-list! It was so nice to see her in her full glory, compared with the tiny drizzle that she has today. Hearing the roar and the flow of thousands of litres of water spilling over the edge was truly amazing. I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of it – it was definitely a beautiful and humbling experience.
Favourite Dining Experience
Boma Dinner and Cultural Show
Being a vegetarian, I thought I may find it difficult to find meals to suit my requirements in a very meat-oriented culture. Very thankfully, I was proved quite wrong! I found it very achievable everywhere I went. The highlight dining experience for me was the Boma Dinner and Cultural Show that we experienced while we were staying in Victoria Falls. It was amazing! There was an array of game meat like: Warthog, Impala, Venison, Zebra, Kudu, Beef and Lamb. The different styles of cooking were quite fascinating for a non-meat eating person, and to top it off the Cultural Show and African Dancing was fantastic!
Rachell’s Top Tips for travelling & experiencing Victoria Falls
1 – Spoil Yourself – I cannot recommend The Victoria Falls Hotel more! You definitely have to splurge and stay there at least once, it’s incredible!
2 – Get Active – If you are fit and able, I would definitely recommend you do the full walk of Victoria Falls from top to bottom, you will be amazed at just how big it really is!
3 – Be firm – As with any foreign country, there are scammers. You have to learn to say ‘No’ to the locals that will approach you on the street trying to sell their carvings.
