Experience an unforgettable Polynesian journey as your ship visits remote ports and exotic islands during the 13 day soft adventure cruise on board the Aranui 5
This has to be one of the most unique cruising experiences in the world – The Aranui 5. Is it a Freighter Ship, or is it a Cruise Ship? The answer is both.
The Marquesas Islands are some of the most remote in French Polynesia. Their only link to the outside world is when the Aranui 5 arrives on its regular visits delivering vital supplies, goods and mail. Copra, citrus fruit, fish and barrels of Noni are then loaded and destined for Papeete. The other side to the Aranui is an intimate cruise environment, with all the creature comforts you would expect on well known cruise ships. Spacious Cabins, bars, restarants and swimming pools will keep you entertained on your cruise.
The real entertainment however is the destination itself, and Aranui is the perfect way to embrace and enjoy the local Marquesas culture and some of the friendliest people on the planet. Prior to arrival you will meet and enjoy listening to expert lecturers giving you an insight into the islands and their history. At each port you will enjoy an included shore excursion, accompanied by Aranui staff (who are all from Polynesia). The time in port may range from a few hours to a day or more and may include meals, tours of villages and archaeological sites and snorkeling.
These port include Vaipaee on Ua Huka where you will explore the island by 4WD, stopping for stunning views of the Pacific, before reaching the beautiful village of Hane. for lunch served at a local family restaurant. Or Atuona on Hiva Oa, the second largest village in the Marquesas, and where artist Paul Gauguin lived and did some of his best work. During your time in Atuona you will also visit the colonial store where Gauguin shopped, as well as a replica of the Impressionist’s infamous “House of Pleasure” and the adjoining museum. Fatu Hiva is the most lush and remote island of the Marquesas and the only access is by sea, since there is no airport on the island. It is also the island of “tapa” and you will discover all about this traditional cloth. In the tranquil village of Omoa in Fatu Hiva, you will see women pounding mulberry, banyan or breadfruit tree bark on logs. The bark is then dried and used as a canvas where the locals will paint ancient Marquesan designs. Fatu Hiva is also well-known for its hand-painted pareos (sarongs) and monoi, coconut oil infused with “Tiare Tahiti” blossoms, vanilla or sandalwood.
In addition to the 14 villages you visit over 7 Marquesas Islands, you will also visit better known islands such as Rangiroa and (today’s National Cruise & Travel Show Destination) stunning Bora Bora. With the cruise departing and returning to Papeete, you also have the chance to extend on Tahiti or Moorea.
The Aranui 5 sails from Papeete, Tahiti throughout the year, and twin cabins are available from just $6,058 per person for the Twin Stateroom. Higher grades are available, including Deluxe Staterooms, Premium Suites, all up to $12,012 per person for the Presidential Suite.
